That Russia still pays Ukraine for gas transport thru it's territory is truly mind bending. It calls into question lots of narratives about this war. Funny you never hear these payments discussed anywhere else, at least I haven't. One question I have is why do the peasants on both sides continue to fight this war? It seems so obviously pointless and not worth dieing over. I guess the propaganda still works somewhat for both sides? I've read the Russian soldiers are mostly paid for their efforts and many serve willingly, while the majority of Ukainian soldiers are mostly unwilling conscripts. Is this true? Why do these unwilling conscripts fight and not just leave? Like so much else, I enjoy reading Edward's perspective on these topics.
Kiev ended its gas transit deal with Moscow at the start of 2025. But for 2 years, Russia was paying Kiev to transit its gas to the "Satanic West", as Ukrainians and Russians were vaporizing each other. Other forms of "economic cooperation" between Moscow and its western partners continue, including enriched uranium sales to the US.

Many of the unwilling conscripts do leave. They say that around 1000 people a month go AWOL (don't know if this is accurate). But many are killed 2-3 days after they arrive at the front line, before they get a chance to leave.

What passes for safety and security has always been about securing elite business interests. Today, risk management has replaced ethics entirely. All decisions are made not to protect life, but to protect the system from disruption with ordinary people absorbing the risk. And because the system exists only to secure business continuity, everything else including people, communities, ecosystems and even the future, is now under permanent threat.
But a system, capitalism, that treats life as a variable cannot survive on a living planet, yet the system cannot stop behaving this way any more than a shark can stop swimming even though its own collapse is a biological inevitability.

But as a peasant or slave, you can be assured that you can be secure in the knowledge that you are expendable. That is a government stamped guarantee.
