Putin offers political asylum to Poroshenko: An actual 5D chess move?

Venal confectionary dealer and suspected war criminal Petro Poroshenko has been offered refuge in Russia. Wait, what?
Take the wheel, TASS:
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that he promised political shelter to Ukrainian ex-President Poroshenko, should he face difficulties.
“Back in the day, when Mr. Poroshenko was a President of Ukraine, I told him that, should he face any difficulties in the future, Russia is ready to provide him with political shelter,” Putin said during a press conference with French leader Emmanuel Macron. […]
“I believe that [Poroshenko] made a lot of mistakes, but his persecution as a state criminal, in my opinion, is an excessive ‘aspiration for success’ of the current leadership,” Putin said. “We are ready to provide shelter to people like Poroshenko… I was not joking when I told [Poroshenko]: ‘you know, a time will come when we will be ready to provide you with political shelter. Over humanitarian concerns. Not because we like his policies so much, but over humanitarian concerns,” Putin said.
For those who missed it: Poroshenko, the chocolate king who had the courage and vision to make post-Maidan Ukraine even more corrupt than pre-Maidan Ukraine, has been accused of treason! Kiev claims the ex-president was involved in the sale of coal from Donbass that helped finance the breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine.
Porky’s assets, including all of his chocolate, have been frozen. If found guilty, he could spend 15 years behind bars. We’re guessing this is why Poroshenko flew from Warsaw to Kiev to face these charges—he didn’t want to lose all his delicious chocolate.
Not surprisingly, Poroshenko did not accept Putin’s generous invitation. Instead, he wrote a rude Facebook post saying his treason charges were an internal matter and that Zelensky had given a “gift” to Putin by dividing Ukraine (or whatever).
But why did Putin make the offer in the first place? There are various theories.
It’s a sneaky trap?
Or so suggests Sputnik:
Putin did not explain what type of asylum Russia is ready to provide—maybe it’s not at all his own comfortable housing in the Rostov region, but a bed in a prison cell in any region.
It’s a troll?
Strana says maybe:
The sudden turn in the Russian president's rhetoric yesterday, of course, surprised everyone. If only because the former Ukrainian president is a very toxic figure for Russia.
It was Poroshenko who consistently severed ties with the Russian Federation, launched a flywheel of political repression in Ukraine against those who advocated peace with Russia. He also promoted narratives of extreme nationalism, banning the Russian language and carrying out scandalous decommunization, and also initiated a deep church schism.
Also, it is him that the Russians accuse of instigating hostilities in the Donbass, shelling cities and disrupting diplomatic efforts.
Therefore, it is unlikely that political asylum will take place if the former president really by some miracle ends up on the territory of the Russian Federation.
And in this context, the proposal to hide Poroshenko in Russia, of course, first of all sounds like some kind of trolling with certain political goals…
By offering Poroshenko to move to Russia, Putin emphasizes that Poroshenko is a politician of the past and teases him. After all, Poroshenko considers himself a possible candidate in the elections, his rating is almost equal to that of Zelensky, and his European Solidarity party is now on an equal footing with Zelensky's Servant of the People… it also throws a stone at Europe, since Poroshenko heads the European Solidarity party, but the EU does not offer him political asylum.
It’s a message to Zelensky?
From the point of view of domestic political competition in Ukraine, Putin’s statement is aimed at Zelensky more than Poroshenko, political scientist Konstantin Kalachev believes.
“Putin is well aware that Poroshenko will not follow [ex-president of Ukraine Viktor] Yanukovych, so this is perceived as a joke and a hint to Zelensky: look at Poroshenko’s fate, don’t find yourself in this place later,” Kalachev shared.
Putin once again reminded the whole world that it was Poroshenko who signed these agreements, crossed all the “red lines” (which he now draws for Zelensky), for which he deserves political asylum in Russia.

"Mmmhh, frozen chocolate"- Putin
He should make it a double and offer asylum to former Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili, who could even do a spot of performing.
