well, according to my adult children, lots of their friends are still living in squalor with university friends and partying like there's no tomorrow. Presumably this is because they can't afford the 800k mortgage. I know many young people who simply can't get on the housing ladder because, even if they manage to get a deposit together, the banks won't lend the silly amount needed. Even though the mortgage repayments are often cheaper per month than the rent on a scuzzy flat. I also heard young people are going back to smoking fags and buying secondhand records so maybe the comparison is not the 80s but the 70s! And, just for more perspective, my grandparents (born at the end of the 19th century) lived in a rented house with no electricity or indoor plumbing until 1975 - he was a journeyman shoe repairer and lay preacher who lived through 2 world wars and died before the boom of the 60s. They were poor at a time when there was no help - my grandmother saved 6 pennies a month towards her funeral for years. It wasn't enough.
It's obvious that the problem is women. They have unrealistic expectations about mens' salary and are holding out for the bigger better deal until they are too old to have any choice.

I think one thing we are seeing is that in developed nations where women now have better economic opportunity and an increased ability to live an independent life, more women increasingly see marriage and child-rearing as a bad bargain. I looked up my father's forget union job wage rate vs housing. In 82, they made 8 an hour and he got his house for 80k.
Today, the same job makes 25/hr but the same house is 800k+.
So the pay went up 3x but the housing 10x+.
And guess what, most of the money we spend today is on housing so where are these young people getting money for the fine stuff?
