it seems to me that it merely accelerated trends already underway around the time of the 2014 coup by the nazis (the western empire). Ukraine already wanted to join NATO, was becoming anti-Russian, was abusing russian civilians in the Donbas, and plans were (so I heard) to attack Russia in not-too-distant future. All of this was underway when Russia finally attacked.
The time to intervene was probably in 2014 before the ukrainian army was armed by NATO and had 8 years to fortify Donbas strongholds.
Looking at it from a larger perspective, and keeping in mind the senseless hatred of Russia by the ruling class here and in Europe, the conflict was inevitable. Much evidence seems to point to Putin being a puppet of the West/Zionists or in cahoots with them, and I tend to believe that's probably true. However, there are two facts that seemingly would undermine that narrative:
1. On March 2023 the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin whereby he now faces imprisonment and trial if he travels abroad.
2. More importantly, on late last December Putin's residence was -reportedly- attacked by drones in an alleged attempt at his life.
It's hard for me to imagine how one of the main participants in a given conspiracy would agree to him being possibly imprisoned or mudered just to please the rest of conspirators and/or make the Russia-West confrontation "look real".

WWII was 6 years, from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. It started with Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 and ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945.

That is, cause we were unable to shrink our debt in the good years, and be absolutely incapable once the economy tanks due the loss of both competitiveness and European peoples living standard ( that is, their portion of consumption, that was holding a part of the economy running ). If the post soviet 90s come to mind, than that is what I mean - but with nothing to sell anymore to have a jump-start for a new kind of economy in the future. Why most of the EU did not and still does not see that is by the design of its political and power structure. The fact that incapable people of banking, dubious schools or schooling programs ( financed by Soros-alikes or from the US in more or less direct matter ) run amok at the highest decision making places, shows how any even thought of other approaches to the conflict was impossible decades before it even happened. Sadly, but a hard reality, even for me, as I live in Slovakia and any possible scenario for even my or the Hungarian people is bleak beyond a light at the end of a tunnel. We have to uderstand, most Ukraian people back in the 2000s were more close to Russians than Czechs and Slovaks, so if it was this easy to divide them in this kind of way, then any even slight ethnic or dividing ideas are a future warfare mean by the "sides" that conspired to this situation. ( I say most, because of the relatively small portion of lands, relative to nowadays UA, that had a more intertwined history with other nations, like Poland and Hungary or others ) For the Ukraians, I feel, they were betrayed the most not by the deaths themselves ( not ignoring them ), but the fact that a nation of the capabilities of a continent ( soviet main fleet builders, cosmic rocket tech, complete aviation building capacity + the resources and location ) fell to the nonsensical idea, that it would survive long whiteout its main trading partner ( severing the ties almost completely in meaningful industry terms ) and siding with an already bankrupt economic block with ever diminishing future prospects ( given the political reality i wrote about before ). I understand the desire for a further market search, but the reality is that both the Shengen, and Russia were two incompatible marketplaces, that would both always protect their own from the negative effects of open trade between them. The reality of it could be seen of the few post Maidan years where most of these industries boasted of future prospects of EU or western markets, only to be confronted with the reality most post-soviet republics had - that the western marked had a need for consumers, not competition. With Antonov, Kraz and other similar former giants as a reminder of this. .... if we take the fact of the EUs leadership inability of policy change - the way they jumped on this conflict is logical, as plunder of UA and possibly RF further down the line was a last-resort like way of keeping themselves relevant into the future. That is, given the visible future prospects of industrial decline and inability to stand up to Aisias growing economic capability and viability. Hence why even now - post Maduro - most of EUs leaders are incapable to stand their own ground. They were basically by design and long term influence - a US tool. And the US in term itself operated for decades on fiat - thus necessity to both war profiteering and the dollars relevance, with was time and time again challenged by other parties ( like Lybia and others before, that challenged the dollar standard - rightfully in the thought that it was a bottleneck for their future prosperity ). I was encouraged somewhat by the seizure of the Crimean peninsula, but left bemused by Moscow’s abandonment of the LPR-DPR, preferring instead to play diplomatic footsie with Poroshenko in Minsk I & II whilst NATO cynically and feverishly armed and trained the hitherto hapless AFU to NATO standards. Meanwhile; during those same intervening eight years, Moscow did zero-zip-nada to prepare for the eventuality of February 2022. It was painfully obvious within the first days of this war--er, “Special Military Operation”--that it was going horribly wrong for the Russian armed forces.
In a dose of dark humor, Washington D.C.’s warlord--Commander Bonespur--on February 28, 2026 told Putin: “Hold my beer!”
Putin got it badly wrong. This will probably lead to the end of the Russian state and the dictatorship that exists there. If so, I don't think I'm going to cry any tears over it. It's sad, it's very sad, but Putin is an idiot anyway, and quite how these two countries came into this kind of situation absolutely beats me.
Superlative analysis as always. More & more the Russian military's performance under Putin resembles that of the last Russian Tsar. Meanwhile; both Ukrainians and Russians die senselessly in a "SMO" that has only sown hatred and mistrust between erstwhile fraternal peoples.
Since the outbreak of the Trump-Netanyahu Folly in Iran, I wonder what additional strain this may place medium to long term on NATO grade arms shipments to Ukraine.
Neither Putin, nor Zelensky are national leaders. They are just like Carney and Macron. They work for High Finance. And now, the goal is to use High Finance for destruction of countries and their infrastructure.
Much evidence seems to point to Putin being a puppet of the West/Zionists or in cahoots with them, and I tend to believe that's probably true. However, there are two facts that seemingly would undermine that narrative:
1. On March 2023 the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin whereby he now faces imprisonment and trial if he travels abroad.
2. More importantly, on late last December Putin's residence was -reportedly- attacked by drones in an alleged attempt at his life.
It's hard for me to imagine how one of the main participants in a given conspiracy would agree to him being possibly imprisoned or mudered just to please the rest of conspirators and/or make the Russia-West confrontation "look real".
Of course, one could argue that the attack on Putin's residence was fake or a false flag, but even so, at least the arrest warrant mentioned in the first place seems to be undeniably real.
Thoughts/reflections on this apparent inconsistence are welcome.
Only way to explain those sacrifices is that Ukraine is a key strategic and nationalist imperative to Putin. We look at the enormous cost and destruction of his invasion as madness but Putin might not.

Thank you for that excellent, as always, analysis Riley. Just a minor correction: the Russia-Ukraine proxy war has not lasted longer than World War II. WWII was 6 years, from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. It started with Germany's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 and ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945.
I should have been more specific: I meant WW2 from Russia's perspective (The Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, ending with their surrender; known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia).
Ah yes, I see. The Great Patriotic War indeed. The love of my life was "Russian to his bones" as he used to say and would march every May 9 on Victory Day in honor of the Immortal Regiment with portraits of his grandfathers, one of whom was killed in the Battle of Moscow.
I was able to live & work in Russia after getting a Master's in International Relations concentrated on Russian Studies. Serozha was from Vyatskiye Polyany, about 600 miles east of Moscow. He was a brilliant mathematician who spoke 4 languages fluently. We first crossed paths as geopolitical simpaticos. It's quite a love story.

As Riley said regarding the Soviet Union's involvement, the time frame I gave reflected Europe & North America's involvement, not East Asia. Yes, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident began the war between Japan & China on that date but for Japan, the war expanded into the wider Pacific with the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It's still disputed whether or not the US allowed the attack to happen to justify US involvement in the war. It would certainly be consistent with US behavior but to my knowledge, there has never been any evidence to prove it.
I would say that the proof is in that the USA knew that Japan had no choice but to go to war over the oil embargo, and signals intel seems to indicate a deliberate choice not to notify Pearl of the approaching fleet..but this is typical of US involvement across the board. Create the conditions for conflict, or create a false flag. The Mexican-American War. The Lusitania incident. Pearl Harbour. Tonkin Gulf. The GWOT. Iran. Venezuela. Panama. Granada.. the list is as long as my arm, there's a clear pattern of wars of choice.

There is not much to add, but the fact that this people splitting event was a given from the moment the Maidan government took hold of power in UA. ( just as the fall of the Syrian government was 100% doom reality for the Kurdish people down the line too ) As for the "debate-ability" of this happening, I suggest looking into stuff that The new Atlas is showing, that a war was since that day inevitable, simply cause how both US and EU operate. For the EU it is even more visible by how they act after the capture of Maduro, where Trump basically put international law on the chopping block. Almost all of EU nations leaders do basically max. damage to themselves out of all options. For Europe, and Germany itself, a split form Russia and its resources is basically an act of suicide - cause the only long-term economical reality of both is the price of its production - kept low due to cheap energy. ( or other resources ). Now, no matter what, a resource-less Europe ( and I mean, in any economically significant amount for decades to come ) can then only by competitive by labour costs - witch means both, tanking the future living standards of European people, and practically trapping them in Africa-nations like debt holes. That is, cause we were unable to shrink our debt in the good years, and be absolutely incapable once the economy tanks due the loss of both competitiveness and European peoples living standard ( that is, their portion of consumption, that was holding a part of the economy running ). If the post soviet 90s come to mind, than that is what I mean - but with nothing to sell anymore to have a jump-start for a new kind of economy in the future. Why most of the EU did not and still does not see that is by the design of its political and power structure. The fact that incapable people of banking, dubious schools or schooling programs ( financed by Soros-alikes or from the US in more or less direct matter ) run amok at the highest decision making places, shows how any even thought of other approaches to the conflict was impossible decades before it even happened. Sadly, but a hard reality, even for me, as I live in Slovakia and any possible scenario for even my or the Hungarian people is bleak beyond a light at the end of a tunnel. We have to uderstand, most Ukraian people back in the 2000s were more close to Russians than Czechs and Slovaks, so if it was this easy to divide them in this kind of way, then any even slight ethnic or dividing ideas are a future warfare mean by the "sides" that conspired to this situation. ( I say most, because of the relatively small portion of lands, relative to nowadays UA, that had a more intertwined history with other nations, like Poland and Hungary or others ) For the Ukraians, I feel, they were betrayed the most not by the deaths themselves ( not ignoring them ), but the fact that a nation of the capabilities of a continent ( soviet main fleet builders, cosmic rocket tech, complete aviation building capacity + the resources and location ) fell to the nonsensical idea, that it would survive long whiteout its main trading partner ( severing the ties almost completely in meaningful industry terms ) and siding with an already bankrupt economic block with ever diminishing future prospects ( given the political reality i wrote about before ). I understand the desire for a further market search, but the reality is that both the Shengen, and Russia were two incompatible marketplaces, that would both always protect their own from the negative effects of open trade between them. With means, the idea of such a deep trade integration to both sides was more of a wishful thinking, than reality. ( as if the EU would border with china and openly added them to the shengen - then getting wrecked by the cheap labout influx and industrial disparity ) Also the fact that a major portion of the Russian army and related industry was based in Ukrainian companies ( witch just adds the overlooked fact, that the outside motivation was this sector as well ). The reality of it could be seen of the few post Maidan years where most of these industries boasted of future prospects of EU or western markets, only to be confronted with the reality most post-soviet republics had - that the western marked had a need for consumers, not competition. With Antonov, Kraz and other similar former giants as a reminder of this. .... if we take the fact of the EUs leadership inability of policy change - the way they jumped on this conflict is logical, as plunder of UA and possibly RF further down the line was a last-resort like way of keeping themselves relevant into the future. That is, given the visible future prospects of industrial decline and inability to stand up to Aisias growing economic capability and viability. Hence why even now - post Maduro - most of EUs leaders are incapable to stand their own ground. They were basically by design and long term influence - a US tool. And the US in term itself operated for decades on fiat - thus necessity to both war profiteering and the dollars relevance, with was time and time again challenged by other parties ( like Lybia and others before, that challenged the dollar standard - rightfully in the thought that it was a bottleneck for their future prosperity ). Sadly, the fact, that the EU could use the Maidan, the 2022 war start, or the Maduro thing as a chance of more independence from the US were not realized, is also the reason, why EU will inevitably crumble. Witch I suspect, is and was the long therm aim of the Russian elite. Not the destruction itself ( as it is miss-portrayed here in the west so often ) but as a logical conclusion of Europe not coming to their senses at all the given chances. China is and will be a future problem for Russia, simply even by demographic realities, ( just as the illegal migration in EU is for itself ). It is a close friend simply by necessity. But it was our part of "work" on convincing them, that the long term worse problem is more a thread than an chance of a open war with NATO trough the post-Maidan UA. ... now, the few Ukrainian extremists can be used as a threat to EU itself ( in more of a GLADIO style way, as they can be abused as energy- and industry-infrastructure terrorism tool ) if things go badly, as well as an immediate economic collapse by the US by not just tariffs. UA will be abused as a barrier for the few rowdy EU nations, form any other economic and energy alternative, that the one, witch will be dictated by the US and both ( EU and UA ) will by necessity, be in a more or less slow economic decline for decades to come. Witch basicaly means, that the same argument - that RF did not get anything from this war - is also true for the whole European continent on the other side. Cause both the NATOs scarecrow argument, or propaganda machine will simply not mesure up to the economic reality, that Europe put itself toward, by not at least trying to avert this situation from happening in the first place. It could have been easy back in 2014 or at least at the Minsk agreements to talk the USs aggressive policymakers out of it ( while also needing to talk down its own few nations, fueling this out of illogical spite ). Convincing both parties for a change of plans now ... it sadly seems impossible. So I fear all this is more a spilled milk argumentation effort. But I think necessary, If we still hope for any glimmer of hope for the future - for all parties involved.
