It was exactly 365 days ago when your humble correspondent, nestled in his Moscow suburb, typed his first-ever Substack Exclusive, titled: “Russia mobilizes robot army to defend restaurants from unvaxxed vermin.”
Who could have foreseen that twelve months later, your still-marooned-in-Tbilisi correspondent would be writing this blog post from the smoky depths of an overpriced Georgian hookah lounge, surrounded by sulky IT specialists evading a slightly different kind of mobilization? Not me. Such is life. She’s a fickle mistress.
How this blog grew from a readership of maybe twenty to many thousands is also a very large mystery—but I am extremely grateful and eternally humbled.
For newcomers who have pressing questions about why this internet destination exists, and what it’s all about, I strongly urge you to read this.
If you are craving a comprehensive overview of the topics that I’ve been writing about for the last year, I would recommend this article published by Unlimited Hangout.
Thank you for reading Edward Slavsquat. It’s been a weird year.

Congratulations, Riley, on the first anniversary on Substack! I think you have done extremely well with your blog in a short period of time. You thoroughness, your expertise on the subject, and your mastery of a written word prove to us all that some of the fundamental qualities of a good writer never go out of style. I look forward to your coming posts. Thanks for spending time on uncovering subjects not really touched by anyone else in the English language blogosphere!
